Short answer: PIN registration is free and done online on iTax at itax.kra.go.ke under "New PIN Registration". Residents receive the PIN certificate on completing the online form.

Individuals

  1. Open iTax and choose New PIN Registration.
  2. Select "Individual" as taxpayer type and "Online form" as the mode.
  3. Complete the form with your ID details and submit.
  4. Download your PIN certificate.

A sole proprietorship does not have a separate PIN: it uses the owner's individual PIN.

Companies and partnerships

Choose "Non-individual", enter the business details, select the tax obligations that apply (for example income tax, VAT, turnover tax or PAYE) and add director or partner details. KRA's FAQ lists a certificate of incorporation, a CR12 and a director's PIN certificate among supporting documents. Directors should be registered and tax compliant on iTax.

Common mistakes

KRA is upgrading its systems, so screens may change. Never share your iTax password or OTP with anyone.
